Brooks, GA

Don’t blink your eye as you pass through or you might miss the gem of a town named Brooks, GA.  It is found about 30 miles south of Atlanta.  It was founded in 1823 as a farming community.  Before that, Creek Indians lived in the area.  The first white family was the Haistens and in fact, the first name of Brooks was Haistentown.  In the 1905, the name was changed to Brooks and it was home to a bank, a drugstore, a grist mill,  and a blacksmith shop.   All of these are gone now.  What you will find are several quaint churches, many beautiful homes, and a great lifestyle.

I always like to see where the grates come from.  I'm not sure why.  I just think it is interesting that they have their own signature.  Their own little piece of artistry.

Interesting moss roof on one of the  houses.

Here is an ethereal angel statue from Brooks United Methodist Church. She's lovely.

Today, Brooks has about 600 residents, a fire department, a post office, and a couple of stores.  My favorite is an antique shop in a 100 year old home.  They have lots of wonderful antiques and some great gifts, too.

Don't bother to come looking for the birdbath in the front.  It is now in my yard.

I might have to go back for this sweet cherub, too.

For now, my trunk is full and it is time to leave.

Off Padget Road is a railroad trestle that is supposed to be haunted.  By night, a plantation owner walks the bridge and it is possible to hear him yelling at his workers if you listen closely enough. Shhh..... Do you hear it?  I think I hear something.  Oops...it was just my kids wailing from the back of the car, “Nooooo, not another antique shop!”  I don't have a picture of the trestle but I think this picture of a barn in Brooks looks a little haunted, too.   What do you think?

There is a cemetery in Brooks with some very old headstones.

May they all rest in the company of angels.

If you like what you've seen so far, there is a place for you in Brooks.  You can open your own store!  Any ideas? Book shop?  Coffee Shop?  Ice cream?  (This is my wish list!)

The best part of Brooks is the evening. It's not the nightlife...it's the "night light."    This gorgeous sunset takes my breath away.
