Gold Grubbin' in Dahlonega GA

In the foothills of the Appalachians north of Atlanta is a small town called Dahlonega.

Did I mention gold?  Indeed I did.  Dahlonega was the start of the 1800's gold rush in the USA.  The phrase "thar's gold in them thar hills" originated right in this tiny town from the steps of this courthouse. The name Dahlonega comes from the Cherokee word "Talonige" or "Dalonige", meaning "yellow money" or "gold."

This courthouse is set in the middle of a town square with shops and businesses around it.  One of the most popular stores is The Dahlonega General Store.

You know the old saying...They sell everything from soup to nuts.. and everything from nuts to beavers.  Okay, I'm not sure the last part is a real saying but it is true if you go in the store.

Okay, your probably thinking, "I didn't see a beaver."  Well, I wasn't kidding!!! He sits high atop a shelf carefully making what looks to be a jumbo pencil.  Actually, he's stuffed but quite imposing by any standards of beaverdom.

We ate a Connie's although there are quite a few great choices of restaurants. We were looking for a quick sandwich and a smoothie and this was the perfect place.

Here is my offspring pretending not to pose at the counter.

Here is my sandwich pretending to be happy that it is about to be eaten.

And for dessert, how about a Moon Pie and a Nehi?

Or, head over to the fudge shop around the corner.
You're getting closer...

and closer...

and closer...

now, take a bite!

Outside the fudge shop is one of my favorite photo opps - the street grate.  (See also Brooks, GA)

Then about 20 feet down the street there was another grate with a surprise on it!

That's because if you look overhead you will see huge mature pecan trees lining the street.

But don't look up for too long in Dahlonega because "thar's gold in them thar hills" and you don't want to miss it!

All right, you got me.  This is chocolate, but there are some places to pan for real gold in Dahlonega.

Good luck panning for your "dalonige."  And don't forget who your friends are!!!
