P.O.P Breaking the Rules
I am breaking my own rules this year. My personal gardening philosophy has always been P.O.P. Should I make you guess what that is? Let's just say that when I'm in a garden store and I am tempted to buy some annuals, I just start chanting P.O.P over and over again until I leave that area of the nursery.
If you haven't figured it out yet, P.O.P stands for Plant Only Perennials. I try to add perennials each year to my garden after many years of watching the annuals croak, never to return. I feel like I'm just planting dollars in the ground when I plant annuals. Perennials, on the other hand, come back to greet me each year. Nevertheless, this year I have decided to plant some annuals - vegetables to be exact - in spite of my long held philosophy. ( I guess my ultimate goal should be to find perennial vegetables! I've heard of a few, but not many - asparagus, rhubarb, radicchio. Check out the hyperlink for perennial vegetables in your zone.)
But, as with my sewing, there are lots of things that I enjoy doing that I'm not exactly an expert at (grammar being another one, since I just ended in a preposition.) I can also add gardening to the list of things that I attempt but have mixed results. This year, I decided to plant my vegetables on my deck in containers rather than putting them in the ground. We have lots of deer and other night roaming animals here so I decided to try the deck instead.
This is an heirloom tomato called Black Pineapple.
This is what the tomato is supposed to look like. Supposedly it will be purple, green and red. Imagine hippie tie dye in salad form.

I also planted an heirloom tomato called The Mortgage Lifter. The man who first grew these tomatoes in the 1930's sold enough to pay off his mortgage, hence the name. When I change the website name to Frankly Tahitian, you'll know I had a bumper crop.

I planted some lettuce so I can eat it with the tomatoes. (Yes, it is supposed to be spotted.)

I also planted spinach and some herbs. I have basil, rosemary and mint. I'll be adding additional herbs as time and dirt permits. Herbs are pretty easy to grow and not all of them are annuals. Yeah!
My favorite plants are the strawberries. It is so amazing to me to watch the strawberries grow out of the flowers.

I'll keep you posted!
