Gone With the Wind - 70th Anniversary

Can you believe it?  70 years of Rhett and Scarlett.  We celebrated by seeing Gone With the Wind at the Fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta.

I took a picture of the marquee but it was hard to stand in the middle of Peachtree Street and wait for all three letters to light up.  I, too, would have been Gone With the Wind had I stood there any longer.

If you have never been to the Fox Theater in Atlanta, you absolutely must take the time to go.  It was originally built in the late 1920's as the  Yaarab Temple Shrine Mosque, headquarters for the 5,000-member Shriners organization.  Even with all those members, they still couldn't afford to finish their headquarters according to plans which were lavish, opulent, incredible, and some would say outrageous. Thus entered William Fox, a movie mogul, who helped with financing. The Fox was now a movie house rather than a Shriners' Temple.

There is much more history to the Fox including its near demise in the 1970's.  You can read more about the history from their
website.  For now, take a peek inside.

The ceiling looks like an Arabian night complete with stars, drifting clouds, tents, and turrets.

The lobby, ballrooms, and even the bathrooms are amazing.  Check out these theater seats.

And the stage curtain (with bonus two heads in the shot.)

Now, time for the main attraction....GWTW as people in the South like to refer to it.

I sneaked a few pictures during the movie of some of the classic scenes - me and everyone else with their cell phones raised above their heads .  It's grainy but authentic.

Here's another from my camera.

The rest of the pictures are stills I found online.  They are of some of my favorite scenes.

Have you ever had on a hoop skirt? I wore a hoop skirt in college for some fraternity parties at the University of Georgia.  It was fun but hard to fit through the doors.  Somehow it wasn't quite the genteel scene from GWTW as we danced around in our hoop skirts to Superfreak by Rick James. Just saying.

I always have to ask...would you marry for money like Scarlett did?

Hmmm..tough question. But here's an even tougher question.  Would you wear draperies?

Or should I call them window treatments?

Would you wear a corset?

And the best of all question that begs to be answered...Would you have been able to get him back?

The movie and the setting were both wonderful and I am ready to go back at a moment's notice.  It was a magical night that certainly was Quintessentially Southern.
