Starr's Mill
Beautiful Starr's Mill is located in southern Fayette County in Georgia. Do you movie buffs recognize it?

Starr's Mill was one of the filming locations for the movie Sweet Home Alabama with Reese Witherspoon and Josh Lucas.

The mill was the glass shop for Jake Perry (actor Josh Lucas - not to be confused with Matthew McConaughey - those hunky blonde-haired buff guys all look alike). You can still purchase drinking glasses from the company who made them for the movie. The company is Simon Pearce.

Here's how the mill looked during filming.

And here it is today.

Once again...behind the scenes at the movie.

And, today. Notice the whole side restaurant part is gone as is the bridge.

The outbuilding during the movie...

The outbuilding today.

The mill is well-maintained by Fayette County, but it is locked up tight. Here is a photo of the front door. Notice the hole under the padlock.

Here it is a bit closer.

In case you are wondering what is inside the building, here is a sneaky peak through the hole.

It doesn't look much like the shop in the movie anymore!

In the movie, Jake makes beautiful blown glass vases from the lightning glass he gets from the beach when he puts out his lightning rods during storms. Does lightning striking sand really cause glass. According to this explanation from Bama Weather it does. Glass made when lightning hits sand is called fulgurite. (Your fun fact for the day.)
After touring the mill, you can have a quiet picnic under oak trees near the water's edge.

Walk along the water and you may find some freshwater clams.

The day we went was a bit overcast so I will leave you with a picture from the internet that shows the mill on a brighter day. This is the classic view of the mill that shows the name sign and the view most often published in magazines or in other promotional publications. I guess I needed the prop guys from the movie to make it picture perfect for me, too.
