Madison, GA
Have you been to Madison, Ga? It is known as the town that "Sherman refused to burn" during the Civil War although ironically has burned three other times in its history. Parts of the city burned in 1844, 1869 and 1916. Nevertheless, many beautiful homes and businesses are still standing.

Madison is located about an hour and a half east of Atlanta. The courthouse is quite imposing. In front is a memorial given by the D.A.R. in honor of WWI Veterans.

This is an old bank on the town square which is now a restaurant. You can choose to eat in the bank vault if you wish. Sorry, no leftover money or gold bullion - just fresh biscuits and hot fried chicken.

There are a lot of great shops and restaurants around the town square and even more stores on streets off the town square.

You'll find books, too. That Ringo Starr, what a sage!

The kids got tired of walking so we went to the Anti-Gravity Store and got them some levitation belts.

Whoa, turn left!

The James Madison Inn overlooks the new park. I have never stayed at the Inn because we always drive over for the day, but it looks really welcoming. Their website has some gorgeous photos.

Although the shopping and parks are nice, what most people come to Madison for is to see the Antebellum houses. The homes are private residences but each December, there is a Holiday Tour of Homes that you shouldn't miss.

Here are a few of my favorite homes in Madison.

This one is huge and still has the carriage house and stables to the side.

Madison is steeped Civil War history including homes like this 1800's beauty...

...and a Confederate Cemetery.

This Victorian house is supposedly the most photographed home in Madison although it is much prettier in spring when more flowers are in bloom.

Here is a picture from the Internet that shows the house in early spring. You can tell that this picture is old because the azaleas are so much bigger now, but I like it because you can see the house better.

Can you still see a hoop skirt in action? Absolutely. We went over to the Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle for lunch. It is a short drive away. The food was great and you can check out selections from the buffet on my earlier post.

It was truly a beautiful day for a visit to Madison and Social Circle. Hope to see you there sometime!
