Fort Mountain State Park

The north Georgia mountains were quite spectacular this weekend.

We went to Fort Mountain State Park.  It is a small park but it is the perfect location for fall color. Lots of yellows this year and not as much red.  Maybe the reds will come.

The park has a circular path that takes hikers up to a rock wall.  Walking up the path you catch sight of the clearing where the rock wall is.  The smaller trees are visible through the trunks of the larger trees and it is beautiful.

Here is the famous "rock wall."  Fort Mountain derives its name from an ancient 855-foot-long rock wall which stands on the highest point of the mountain. The mysterious wall is thought to have been built by Indians as fortification against other more hostile Indians or for ancient ceremonies.

I'm not sure how hostile these other tribes really were because I am old and out of shape and I could pretty much just step over the walls.  Maybe it was tribe of geriatric warriors.  This wall would stop them,  I think.

Although I did see several silver-haired hikers who weren't having much trouble navigating the walls either.

The range of colors in this leaf was interesting to me.

I also liked the lichen and was amused by the moss.  (I thought I would try some alliteration to hold your attention.  How many leaf pictures can one tolerate?)

This scary lichen was hiding along the trail.  I guess he knows Halloween is coming soon.

At the top of the trail is the fort tower.

There is also an deck overlook where you can see for miles.  Lots of people come to the park.   Apparently if your name starts with a "D" you have the proclivity to vandalize.

Ohhhh.  But there's Bob and his name starts with a "B"...maybe you just have to be a guy with a pocket knife and time on your hands to be a vandal.

Back to the view.  It was particularly enchanting to be in the middle of the colorful leaves instead of just pulling up on a roadside scenic overlook for a photo stop.

Even the parking lot was gorgeous. Time to go.  Next stop is Panorama Orchards.

Julie, First, we love looking at your blog. Great pics. My friend asked me what kind of camera you use. So...what kind of camera do you use?

    Hope you're doing well.

Thank you!  I use a Fujifilm Finepix S8100fd.  I love it.  Most of the close up photos are taken on the macro setting.  It has been a great camera for me.  VERY easy to use!
