Hunger Games Cookies

Hunger Games Cookies

Like millions of other people we bought the Hunger Games DVD  the first day it came out.  They are great books and movie, in case you are one of the five people left in America who hasn’t read or heard of this series yet.

We also have The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook.  They are not kidding when they say it is “unofficial.”  It includes some recipes that are VERY loosely based upon ideas from the book or perhaps upon whims of somebody’s grandma who wanted her recipes in the book whether it was mentioned in the series or not.  Nevertheless, the cookies we made were quite tasty.  Way to go Granny June or whoever you are!

This recipe is for cookies that Katniss didn’t actually eat.  According to the cookbook, in chapter 4  Katniss threw these out the train window.  The cookies were from Peeta’s father and she didn’t want to be emotionally attached to someone she would have to kill later.  Spoiler alert: she could have eaten the cookies.

Butter Cookies from Peeta’s Father   (The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook by Emily Ansara Gaines)

  • 1 cup butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
In a bowl, beat butter, sugar, salt and vanilla together until smooth and creamy.  Add egg yolk, beat until fully incorporated.  Add flour 1 cup at a time, beating until mixed.  Roll dough into one log and place in waxed paper.  Chill 2 hours.  Slice cookie dough and bake at 325 degrees for 15 – 18 minutes on a lightly greased cookie sheet.
I can’t wait to try another recipe from this book for the next time we watch the movie, which will probably be soon.  I found this gorgeous photo of a Hunger Games meal online.  It came from this website although I’m not sure the author of that blog was the photostylist.  So if you styled the picture below, please let me know so I can give you credit. In looking through the cookbook and looking at this photo,  I’m thinking I will make the breads from the different districts next, unofficially, of course.
