For most people in a sane world, summer is still here. But for those of us in the south, summer ends in exactly two days. TWO DAYS!!! I start back to school on Friday. For the next two days I will be going around like crazy trying to cram all the things I didn’t do this summer. Forty eight hours of summer bucket listing. Today, I made this rope vase. The supplies have been in my garage for months but when I started seeing the emails from my school welcoming me back, I knew I had to get busy.
I don’t particularly have a nautical theme in my house but I don’t think rope has to be limited to aquatic decor. Rope is earthy and natural. Let me just say that I consider going back to school in July to be non-earthy and unnatural. Instead of an apple for back to school, apparently the theme should be beachy. Toss a shell wreath on my door, have mermaids dancing about the room and hang seaweed from the ceiling and I am decorated for my July Back-to School theme. The beach – that’s what July is for!!! Heck, I still have my Fourth of July bunting hanging and now I’m supposed to replace it with apples?
I realize I am digressing but I am still getting over the shock of another summer gone. I think I need a do-over. One more chance to soak up the sun, dance in the sand, and doze in a hammock. Really, I’m not asking for much. Making this rope vase helped a little bit today. It did give my coffee table a nice summery look and gave me an hour of distraction from my shrinking summer blues.
How to Make a Rope Vase
This rope vase is super simple to make. All you need is an empty can – you choose the size, hot glue gun and rope. I chose sisal and cotton clothesline rope. Both are cheap and easy to find. My sisal was 50 feet long and I didn’t use all of the clothesline rope so one clothesline was plenty. Today I made two rope vases in different sizes.
First, glue the end of the rope to the bottom edge of the can. After that, place the hot glue on the can in about 3-inch lengths and press the rope onto the glue. Finally, continue wrapping until you cover the can.
The first rope vase I made was from a small coffee can. Get lots of glue sticks ready because you will need them. I had my glue gun placed on the hot melt setting.
Just about done… much like my summer.
I ended up covering the bottom of the can and turning it over to make a candle stand. It won’t be fireproof so you might want to consider using a battery operated candle. I placed a real candle on top and will exchange it for a battery candle when I get one.
For a second rope vase, I used a giant baked bean can left over from Western Night. Lots 0′ beans. I finished off the sisal and then continued wrapping with the clothesline. It made a two-tone effect that I really like in our family room.
I added some flowers from Sprouts (a local grocery store) and a foam ball covered in shells and twine I bought previously at Michael’s. Place a mason jar or glass vase in the can to hold the flowers. I don’t think I would try to put water directly in the can.
Blog Information
I am hearing from some people that when you look at the blog on your phone, you are not seeing the Blog Title Header or the first picture of each blog post. I found that if you click on the title of the blog or on the link at the bottom, it will take you to the full site and you can see all the photos. Try poking around a bit and see if you find it. And always, you can come to the blog directly through the internet at www.franklysouthern.com Hope that helps. Now, if someone could help me with my disappearing summer, I would appreciate it!!
Like this rope vase very much…don’t have any immediate uses but it’s a great idea to file in my “brain”
I saw a similar idea where they put the rope on the outside of a cardboard box and lined the inside with fabric. It would be a much more extensive DIY but it opens up the possibilities for use because it could be bigger.
When we were in school we went back to school right after Labor Day. I’ve never understood the current schedule. As to accessing the blog. It looks great on my Kindle tablet.
I know! I remember looking at something I wrote about school YEARS ago and I mentioned getting three months off in the summer. Now we get more breaks in the year and less than 2 months off in the summer. I do enjoy it and I’m not complaining. Just comparing. (For all the non teachers out there, this isn’t paid vacation like a normal job. Just the arrangement of days we work! 190 no matter how you slice it.)
So glad you are back! I wanted to cry when you lost your original blog; you had a treasure chest full of wonderful recipes which I didn’t save thinking I could pull them up as needed. May you have the bestest year ever at school. Brenda Scruggs.
I was in a panic, too. Then I recovered the posts, thankfully. Now I’m in the process of transferring the recipes to this format. I have finished about 30 out of approximately 200. Won’t be long!
Yay–I can access the blog today–guess it was just a hiccup but it’s all fixed today!
The rope vase is a great idea. I think my 10 1/2 year-old grandson would enjoy making this with me, too.
This looks like something I need to try!
