I made my very own Shibumi Silk Scarf at a craft festival.  You may have seen these booths at your local fairs, but this was the first time I had seen one around here and I had to try it.

P2

You start out with a long tank of water.

P7

Then you drip inks all over the water.  You get to choose the colors.

P8

You keep adding until you are “done” or satisfied with the design.

P4

Next you get a wooden skewer and swirl the pigments. In retrospect I liked mine a little better before I swirled but just like vinegar and oil in a cruet, there’s no turning back once you start mixing.

P5

Next, you pull a piece of silk taut across the top of the water table. This is a two person job and then you simply lay the silk over the water slowly to absorb the colors.

P3P6

When you pull it up, the colors are adhered and you take it home in a bag to dry and enjoy.  It was simple and fun.  This is a scarf you can wear, but I don’t wear scarves because they make me too hot so I am using mine as a table runner.

After I see it on the table, I’ve changed my mind again and I’m glad I did swirl the colors. I love it.   I believe I could have stood there all day making them with different colors and patterns.  Each one was unique and treasured by the person making it.

Now, don’t spill anything on it or you will be in big trouble. No gravy or spaghetti for this meal!  I’m thinking dry toast and peanuts. Surely no one can make a mess of that.

It was very easy to do with my two “helpers” guiding me. It would be interesting to see if there is a home version to try somewhere online.
