Sock Shoppe

Sock Shoppe

One of my favorite stores for the last 40 years (yes, 40 years!) has been the Griffin Sock Shop.  I started going there in my teens when the store was located in a garage across from the current location.   The Sock Shop opened in 1936 as a way to sell seconds from the Spalding Knitting Mill across the street.  Charles Futral worked all week in the mill and then bought and sold seconds on the weekends.

I started going to the Sock Shop in high school.  We would drive about 50 minutes down Highway 41 from East Point. The first store was a garage-type building with a ramp or slanting floor.  There was a one-way path through the store.  You could gather as you went along but there was not much chance of going back if you wanted anything you missed.  You pretty much had to go outside and start the loop again. Sometimes you could squeeze back up the path if it wasn’t busy, but most times, you just had to keep moving.

I remember the building as being white and you started your trek on the left side.  Now, as a disclaimer, someone with a much better memory than I have can correct ANY of my faulty statements, but that’s how I remember my early days at the Sock Shop . This is the building.  It is across the street from the current store.

Recently on the new building a muralist painted a wonderful old fashioned scene. I love the perspective. That’s the real sky on the top.  It was a gorgeous day Saturday.

The Sock Shop is a great store!  There are always bargains to be had and fun things to find.

There are, of course, socks to buy!

One of my favorite fascinations is the giant bra and underwear section. Don’t know why.  It really is the only place I’ve seen such large undergarments.

Looks comfy to me.

We had a little fun with the giant bras last Christmas as stocking stuffers. Glamour Gals!

It used to be called Spalding Hosiery Shoppe because it was located in Spalding County, not to be confused with the Spalding brand. Everyone pretty much calls it the Griffin Sock Shop and I guess the name is officially changed. Whatever the name, it’s a great place to go.

Hi, funny you should talk about the Sock Shop. My daughter-in-law is Director of Human Relations there. We went down last Friday and it was crowded but so much fun. One can buy almost anything to wear. I believe there are 6 stores now. Did you go to the Children’s Shop, and Dry Falls sportswear? A trip to the Sock is very special but take your time. Lots to see and buy.

I have not been to Dry Falls yet. It looks interesting. I will put it on the list for my next visit which I’m sure will be soon!
