Sugar Scrubs

Sugar Scrubs

I had fun making some sugar scrubs today for my dry winter hands and feet. With a quick trip to the health food store and an even quicker trip to my pantry, I had lots of interesting ingredients to put in my scrub.

They are incredibly easy to make and work well to exfoliate the skin. Rubbing sugar on your body to make it soft sounds somewhat Willy Wonka-esque, however I guarantee that you won’t end up looking like an Oompa Loompa if you give it a try.(Unless you started out looking like an Oompa Loompa in the first place…which my hair sometimes does no matter how long I work with it in the morning.)

Science Lesson #1  The sugar doesn’t dissolve in the oil. Neither will salt.  Simply put there are no chemical bonds and the two substances remain separate.  Given that property, you can create many interesting scrubs with the sugar and/or salt permanently suspended in the oil.

My scrub today was a personal concoction.

Sugar Scrub a la Julie

1/2 cup sugar

1 tablespoon salt

3 tablespoons olive oil

2 drops red thyme essential oil

2 drops lavender essential oil

1 capsule vitamin E, opened and squeezed out

Mix all ingredients together and place in a small jar.
