Warm Springs Lunch and Shopping

Warm Springs Lunch and Shopping

It is muggy, rainy, and foggy.  Perfect weather for shopping.  Sort of.    The good thing is that the stores aren’t super-crowded but the bad thing is… the rain, mugginess, and fog.

We drove 40 minutes south to Warm Springs, GA.  If it sounds familiar it’s because Warm Springs is where President Roosevelt came for the rehabilitative properties of the warm mineral springs.  It was a polio treatment center in 1927 and FDR also built the Little White House for his personal use while he took advantage of the therapeutic 88 degree waters. The Little White House is open for tours but the warm springs are not open for public swimming.

There are some very nice stores in the town of Warm Springs on both sides of the road and we visited them all.

The first store we entered was appropriately named The Boutique and it had great Christmas items all through the store.

This tree topper wins the prize for most flamboyant.  When did tree toppers get so big with squigglies coming out from them?  Where are the stars and the angels?

Wowsa!

They also had a gorgeous Fontanini section. You, too, can have a 70-inch Fontanini nativity donkey for $7,200.00 plus shipping.  Beautiful but a bit pricey for me!

I looked up the cost of a live donkey and I can get this one for $150.00.  Not kidding.

Another gift shop was in the Bed and Breakfast of Warm Springs. The Hotel Tuscawilla was named after a Creek Indian Princess as this area was originally Creek land. The hotel housed many of FDR’s guests including the king and queen of Spain, the queen of Mexico, and Bette Davis.  FDR frequented the soda shop in the lobby.

This hotel is now considered a haunted hotel and  is listed in a book called Hosts with Ghosts as well as other haunted travel sites. If you stay there watch for ghostly children playing in the halls and a nightgowned older lady grief-stricken for her lost love.  With that said, I went in there and sensed nothing out of the ordinary and didn’t know of these apparitions until I came home and read about them. I guess I’m not attuned to these sorts of things and honestly don’t really want to be.

We finished shopping with a DELICIOUS southern buffet at the Bulloch House restaurant.

The menu board described the buffet.  I tasted everything except the chicken livers and sweet peas.  Nope and nope for those two as far as I’m concerned.

The rest of the buffet featured lots of my favorites including the best fried green tomatoes I have ever eaten. The collard greens and biscuits were tender and delicious. The fried chicken was perfect and the mashed potatoes were real  with skins mixed in.  Six layer chocolate cake finished the meal.  What a treat!

Next stop is Pine Mountain.  I’ll get those photos ready soon.

Love your blogs! Just thought you should know, I had to do a double take, but I did see sacks of donkey corn for sale as I was heading out of Walmart this morning. Do you need me to chip-in on the donkey?

Absolutely! Maybe someone else can get him some hay, too! It could be a time-share donkey.

Yes, the food was delicious! If I only had the real mashed potatoes and the fried green tomatoes it would be worth the price.
